Introduction

Administered by the Institute of Foreign Languages at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Khmer for Foreigners is a non-degree private course for foreigners who wish to learn to read, write and speak Khmer.

The course consists of four graded levels, which can be taken successfully over one year, or spread out over a longer period. The Khmer for Foreigners course is extremely flexible, as each unit can be taken as a discrete intensive short course. Each level is offered four times a year, for 8-10 weeks. Classes run for 1.5 hours each weekday, with students choosing to attend morning and afternoon classes.

Students who progress through all four courses and are highly proficient in Khmer may choose to continue their Khmer studies by taking classes with local students at RUPP’s Department of Khmer Literature.

The Khmer for Foreigners course was established in 1983 by the Cambodian Minister for Education. It was designed to train foreign students who studied in Cambodia through reciprocal exchange agreements. Since that time, the course has shifted its focus towards training foreigners who come to work in Cambodia, particularly for non-government organizations (NGOs), and who wish to learn the Khmer language.

Background

The course costs $800 for one year, or $200 per level.

Admission

Assessment

Students who wish to receive certification must sit the examination at the end of their study period or level.

Advanced Study of Khmer Program

Besides the flagship, four-level Khmer for Foreigners program, the Khmer for Foreigners team also accepts students learning Khmer at overseas universities to undertake a six-week Khmer-language practicum. The Advanced Study of Khmer Program (ASK) allows overseas students majoring in Khmer Studies to acquire the linguistic foundation necessary to engage in academic research, professional discourse and cultural interaction with all segments of Cambodian society.

The ASK program consists of structured, six-week academic program, consisting of four hours of task-based language instruction in the morning and of three hours of pre-arranged field trips, site visits and related activities in the afternoons and weekends. The ASK course is equivalent to two semesters of regular language study.

Students from the University of Hawaii and other universities have undertaken the ASK program every year since 2002. Their progression is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the Fulbright-Hays and Group Projects.

Khmer Language for French Speakers

Instead of the Khmer for Foreigners course, French native speakers can elect to take the Khmer Language for French Speakers, which is offered by the Department of Linguistics. This course is tailored to suit French professionals and others. Please contact the Department of Linguistics for further information.
